Pet health tips

Keeping pets safe, Miami style.

South Florida comes with its own pet dangers. Here's what every Miami pet parent should know.

Most common emergency

Cane toads

  • They come out at night, especially after rain. Leash your dog and check the yard first.
  • Signs: heavy drooling, red gums, pawing at the mouth or shaking.
  • Wipe the gums with a damp cloth and come in right away.
All year long

Heat & hot pavement

  • Walk early in the morning or after sunset.
  • Press the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. Too hot for you is too hot for paws.
  • Never leave a pet in the car, even with the windows down.
June to November

Hurricane season

  • Pack a go-bag: a week of food and water, medicine, records and a recent photo.
  • Make sure their microchip has your current phone number.
  • Check in advance which shelters and hotels accept pets.
In many Miami yards

Sago palms & lilies

  • Every part of the sago palm is toxic, especially the seeds.
  • Lilies can cause kidney failure in cats, even from a little pollen.
  • Think they chewed one? Treat it as an emergency.
